When you give everything to something outside yourself, be it a relationship, a job, a band, whatever. When that thing goes away, or falls apart you'll find yourself empty and broken. Don't be afraid to be a little bit selfish and hold on to some of you for your own sake. I (Steve) wrote these lyrics after working for five years in a locked psychiatric treatment center as an academic teacher. Compassion Fatigue is a real thing. Look it up.

Why can't I give this away?
This emptiness that covers
any light I shed today.
Why do I have to watch it bleed?
It wasn't what they wanted,
but i might be what they need.
There are days when I just want to sleep
because I can't repair the damage,
and their wounds are far too deep.
And when there's nothing left to take,
will my eyes be as hollow
as the ones we tried to save?
